What does the organisation do? The AERC was established in 1982 by an Act of Parliament and administers a charitable fund that supports education and research projects and novel forms of help to those with drinking problems. We seek to increase awareness of alcohol issues, to reduce alcohol related harm in society and to encourage best practice. We aim to make a positive difference to the ways in which society understands and uses alcohol. We are entering an exciting new phase in our development. We want to substantially increase the number of projects we fund and the influence we have on alcohol policy and practice.
What is the opportunity? We are embarking on an exciting new phase in our development. We aim to become the foremost provider of the evidence base that will underpin policy and practice around alcohol-related harm. We are seeking 5 trustees who can help drive us forward by bringing in a range of new skills.
What competencies do you need? You should have an interest in reducing alcohol related harm. In particular, we are seeking people from the public, private, voluntary or academic sectors who can bring knowledge of one or more of the following: fundraising; contacts within wealth circles or the business community; accountancy; legal; investment management; marketing and communications; public health inc. relevant funding streams; psychiatric practice in relation to alcohol-harm. You will be prepared to take an active role in our work and be prepared to give 6 – 8 days a year to attend meetings.
How do you apply or get more information? We are a registered charity and a ‘Non Departmental Public Body’, sponsored by the Department of Health and the appointment of trustees is a responsibility of Government. To apply, please call 0870 240 3802 during office hours or go to www.appointments.org.uk, quoting reference DH9100C for an information pack and application form. Alternatively, contact Dave Roberts, CEO of the AERC for an initial chat, using the contact details above.
Is there anything else you should know? Although we are based in London, our trustees come from across the UK. The position is not remunerated; however, expenses are paid.
