What does the organisation do?
For the past ten years Back on the Map has worked hard to bring a new concept in regeneration to Hendon and the East End of Sunderland. We have made a real difference to the Hendon and East End community. We have met targets in housing, environment, education, employment, community safety, health and community empowerment. Progress has been made in all areas and we have closed the gap with the rest of the city in many of these target areas. Evidence shows that there has been a significant increase in satisfaction with the area as a place to live and residents feel that Back on the Map has made a difference to their area.
What is the opportunity?
The New Deal for Communities programme is led by the community, with the emphasis on generating improvements from within. As we approach the end of our ten year funded programme, the government has set a new challenge – to establish a successor organisation that will continue to deliver improvements to the area long into the future.
The community is up for the challenge and the current resident board has developed a number of priorities for the future. In April 2011 a new board, made up of six residents and five other directors, will begin work to deliver these priorities and develop a new vision for the area. We’re looking for the right people to help take this forward, people who can bring expertise and passion from their own area of work and who can use this experience to benefit the Hendon and East End community.
The new charity will build on the successes of the ten year programme. The main focus will be to help residents to influence what happens in their own area, through neighbourhood management, community empowerment and engagement and local capacity building. Work will continue to tackle worklessness in the area, as well as supporting improvements in housing standards. Overall Back on the Map aims to maintain its active partnerships in the area in order to give residents a strong voice.
What competencies do you need?
The charity will need to be self-financing and members of the board will play an active role in supporting this, using expertise and connections to help us attract future funding. There are a number of backgrounds and skills that may be beneficial to the new charity, including legal, financial, business, community/voluntary, housing, asset management and regional/local partnerships. We are looking for candidates from the public, private and voluntary/community sectors. Although the role is voluntary, this is an opportunity to be involved with an unconventional and innovative charity that can drive continued and sustained change in Hendon and the East End.
