What does the organisation do? Bishopsgate Institute is a unique cultural institute located in the City of London, between Liverpool Street and Spitalfields, bordering the East End. We provide a wide range of courses for adults, an exciting programme of cultural events, and an independent library which offers free public access to our world-renowned collections on London, labour, free-thought, humanism and co-operation. Built in 1894, the Institute is a large grade II* listed building designed by Charles Harrison Townsend. We are nearly half way through a major £7 million refurbishment to improve access and modernise our facilities.
What is the opportunity? We are looking to recruit additional Trustees to help us by supplementing the range of skills and knowledge that we already have on the Board. Applicants will have a good understanding of the principles which govern UK charities, experience of strategic planning (in the business or not-for-profit sector), as well as experience of setting goals and monitoring their achievement. We regard it as very important that all trustees bring a customer focus to the Board. All new trustees are given a full and detailed induction to the Institute and their role and responsibilities.
What competencies do you need? A trustee is sought with high-level experience of the development of libraries and archives, making them accessible to students, researchers and the public. This person would be expected to advise on methods and strategies for libraries to widen audiences and on utilising the latest technological developments.
How do you apply or get more information? Further information and a recruitment pack is available at: www.bishopsgate.org.uk/jobs
Is there anything else you should know? Bishopsgate Institute values diversity and is keen to achieve a more diverse board of Trustees in order to more appropriately reflect its users.
