What does the organisation do?
Showroom Cinema and Workstation Creative Business Centre is based in a converted 1930’s building, located in the centre of Sheffield close to the train station. The once derelict building was acquired for redevelopment by Sheffield Media & Exhibition Centre Ltd (SMEC) in 1989 and opened in stages from 1993 -1998. It is now an internationally significant cultural centre and hub for the region and a treasured independent cinema.
Showroom is one of the largest independent cinemas in Europe with four luxury auditoria, education spaces and a café/bar. It presents a lively programme of films from around the world, from contemporary film to classic cinema, and is the place to be for anyone with a passion for film. Showroom regularly hosts festivals and creative events, which give a chance to meet experts from different media, learn new skills and cultivate new ideas.
The Workstation is a hothouse for the creative industries sector, with over 60 tenant companies working with clients in the region, the UK and beyond.
Open 364 days of the year, the Showroom and Workstation Creative Business Centre is a vibrant cultural centre in the heart of Sheffield, a place to meet, work, learn and play.
What is the opportunity?
We are seeking an experienced and influential leader to take on the challenge of leading our organisation as the Chair of a Board of Directors. As Chair you will work closely with Trustees, the Chief Executive and Senior Management Team to ensure that the organisation achieves its business and cultural objectives.
Sheffield Media & Exhibition Centre aspires to be one of Yorkshire’s pioneering cultural centres. Already a prestigious independent cinema and creative business centre in Sheffield we have ambitious plans to develop our cultural impact further regionally and nationally.

What competencies do you need?

Excellent leadership skills including leading organisations through major change
Proven success in establishing sustainable commercial activities and income generation
Strong communication skills including ability to chair meetings
Experience of the cultural sector and of balancing business with cultural, community or social objectives
Ability to understand local, regional and cultural agendas and how SMEC can contribute to them
Ability to represent SMEC and to inspire confidence in staff, other trustees, funders and key stakeholders
Extensive engagement in relevant networks and the ability to influence key networks and build partnerships that support SMEC’s objectives
A commitment to the aims and objectives of SMEC and to promoting its work;
A commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

Paternoster Limited and the Showroom Catering Company are run as trading companies with the aim of gift aiding any profits to the parent charitable company to support its charitable activities
