What does the organisation do?
The Royal Mint Museum was established as an organisation independent of the Royal Mint in December 2009. Its history, however, stretches back for 200 years and over that time it has been an important part of the Royal Mint’s activities. The creation of an independent Museum was initiated to give long-term security to the collection, to establish a clear educational and charitable remit and to enable it to expand its services through external funding.
What is the opportunity?
To maintain, protect and develop an internationally important collection of British coins and medals, associated items and coins and medals produced by the Royal Mint for other countries.
To provide public access to the collection.
To raise public awareness and knowledge of British and world coinages.
To provide educational services.
To provide services to the Royal Mint and HM Treasury in relation to coin history, coin design and coin law.
What competencies do you need?
Fund-raising expertise. The Museum has ambitious development plans. For some of these plans, the funding is already in place. There will, however, be a need to attract substantial funds from other sources. The successful candidate should, therefore, be able to demonstrate significant fundraising skills and experience within a museum, educational or visitor attraction environment.
Museum expertise. Given that the Museum was previously part of the Royal Mint, it has not operated as a public museum in the traditional sense. The successful candidate will, therefore, have extensive experience in the museum/visitor attraction field, without any requirement for specialist knowledge of coins.
Experience gained in other Trustee/Non-Executive Director roles would be an advantage, but is not essential.
How do you apply or get more information?
Call or e-mail for an application pack.
Is there anything else you should know?
The time requirement is likely to be no more than ten days a year. The roles are unpaid, although all reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
