What does the organisation do?
A community-based registered charity in East London, it came together to resurrect vandalised gardens and Grade II Listed bandstand. In 6 years, they attracted 450 members with their events, outreach, schools programme and gardening. And transformed the site that is at the heart of an area that is highly culturally mixed.
What is the opportunity?
The Friends need to evolve, building on their success but responding to changed conditions. They are looking for a Transition Chair who will work with them for an average of 1 day a week for 6 mths from Sept/Oct to guide, shape and inspire the process, and to help create a template for similar voluntary organisations operating at the powerful crossroads of social action, community, localism and the arts.
What competencies do you need?
• Experience with and understanding of community voluntary organisations, especially those based in multicultural societies
• Proven ability to balance aspirations against practicality, in terms of planning and implementation
• Knowledge of arts/community funding structures
• Awareness of the current shifts within local government: their opportunities and difficulties
• Ability to see and draw workable structures out of potential
. Ability to work with tact and respect with voluntary board and members
How do you apply or get more information?
Contact the current Chair - who will continue with the legal duties of a chair during the transitional period envisaged. Details as above.
The Charity Commission website gives more details, and the Friends' own site - www.foac.org.uk
Is there anything else you should know?
This is a voluntary post, with expenses paid. The organisation is relatively high-profile, and the context within which it is operating coincides significantly with directions indicated by government.
